How To Get Your Home Ready for Winter Vacation

The holidays are right around the corner! If your plans for winter vacation include traveling and leaving your home for a longer period of time, there are some things you’ll want to think about before you pile into the car and go over the river and through the woods to see your family. To make returning home a breeze, follow these steps!

This might seem pretty obvious, but be sure to set your thermostat down to 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit will help you save on your power bill and avoid wasting energy. Don’t set it below 50 degrees though or your pipes could burst if they freeze.

Turn off the Water

Don’t just turn off your water sources inside your home. After you have turned off the main source, don’t forget to open up every faucet and drain the water lines. Check throughout your home and make sure the toilets, water heater (turn off the gas and electric supply first), and the expansion tank have all been drained.

Exterior Faucets

Every exterior faucet should have a shut-off valve inside your home or basement. Loate all of the shut-off valves for each faucet and shut the water off in a clockwise direction completely. Turn on all faucets to rain any water left in them. If the water continues to flow, check the valve to make sure it’s off. Leave the faucet handle turned on throughout the winter!

Before you head out, walk through your home and unplug any appliances or gadgets including microwaves, TVs, and even your oven. This will help avoid the risk of fire in the event of a faulty switch or a rodent gnawing on the wires. Planning on leaving for a long time? Experts suggest turning off gas hot water heaters completely. Water heaters use a lot of energy, just by keeping the water in the tank hot. For gas water heaters, the simplest option is to switch the unit to “pilot.”
